When should I take Senior Photos?

When you should have your senior photos done is totally a personal preference but there are some things to consider before making this decision. Thankfully, in Kansas we have several months to shoot senior photos, typically from June to early November. Each season has its pros and cons. Here are some things to consider when deciding when to take senior photos:

  • Are you involved in a lot of school activities or sports that may be hard to schedule around during the school year? If so, Summer is a great option.

  • Are you interested in night or rooftop shots? If so, I recommend a Summer session. Rooftop or night shots in the Fall can be very cold.

  • Do you want flowers in your photos?

  • Do you love Fall colors and want those in your photos?

Summer Senior Photos

Summer seniors are the best. It's a great way to have fun and get excited for the upcoming school year. The light is warm, there are colorful flowers, Summer outfits include sundresses and and warm summer nights on a rooftop are amazing! The one downside… it will be hot but I have things I do that make your session enjoyable in the heat!

Fall Photos

Fall is such a great time for senior photos, with all the beautiful autumn colors. The weather is cooler at the beginning of Fall but flowers are still available. September is the perfect mix of Summer with cooler temps. Late Fall has all the beautiful colors from the trees. Late Fall can have some crazy, unpredictable weather though so you have to be flexible about rescheduling your session for wind, rain or clouds.

It's important to remember that there are no rules for when you should take your senior photos. Take your senior photos whenever you feel ready. Just make sure to plan ahead and book your photographer early to ensure that you get the best photos and the season you want. Most senior photographers start booking for the year in January. If you want a certain month, it’s best to book early!
